Can confirm, work's again
Iceberg
"In what may be the hottest year in history", the game finally started working! I confirm that in the version 1.11.1 the problem is now gone. I'm eager to play the game now, after a long break. Thank you devs!

Patch 1.11.1 Behemoth
Implemented a workaround solution resolving the problem with the cinematics in the game on Windows 7.
Basically we changed the codecs that are used from H.264 to VP8 so it should solve the problem even for non Win 7 users.

Vit Barta: Looks like that's working well - thanks!

Yet another black screen issue
Iceberg
Like several other reports I could find, the game starts for me with a loading screen and then a black screen with cursor only instead of intro cutscene. Then I can move forward by pressing Escape and everything is playable, but the story is non-existent because no cutscene plays, it's a black a black screen every time.
I am running the game on Windows 7 64-bit, on both Epic and Steam and the problem happens on both platforms. It used to work (back then I ran it from Epic store) and broke few months ago with some update. I have the game since the release (or actually since Backer Build 2...) and the cutscene issue issue started didn't happen initially.
I've checked the Player.log file and found related error message there:
Context: Setting media type for first video stream
Error details: The data specified for the media type is invalid, inconsistent, or not supported by this object.
Track types:
Video Track [1920 x 1080], type: H264
I have already tried all solutions proposed on all forums I could find. Upgrading vcredist doesn't help. Updating graphics card drivers doesn's help (NVIDIA). Installing Windows Media Feature Package is not an option here because it's available only on Windows 10 and Windows 7 N.
Please help. It's very nice to receive free DLCs for Backers but being unable to play the game properly makes it only frustrating...

Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit here as well, same issue, cut scenes all gone.

I have this problem as well--basically game breaking due to severely limited exposure to the story. I think my case is a Unity bug related to Windows 7 and particular types of video:
They say they fixed it in Unity build 2021.2.0a13 so if Snapshot does an engine update it might just go away without further effort.

Try updating Microsoft Redistributable: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/topic/the-latest-supported-visual-c-downloads-2647da03-1eea-4433-9aff-95f26a218cc0
And installing these codecs (or any other codecs with H.264): https://codecguide.com/download_k-lite_codec_pack_full.htm

Vit Barta: thanks that worked
